The First International Open Championship, dedicated to 90th anniversary of the birth of the national leader
Heydar Aliyev was held

10-12 May, 2013 the International Orienteering Championship dedicated to the 90-th anniversary of the birth of the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev was held. Heydar Aliyev paid special attention to the development of sport in Azerbaijan.

The competitions were held on 3 (of 11 existing in Azerbaijan) new sports maps which has been prepared by the foreign specialists and meet all the international standards. Except orienteering sportsmen from Azerbaijan, there were participants from Georgia, Kazakhstan, China, Moldova, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and France.

The total number of participants for 2 days of the competitions counts 241 persons (represents 29 teams). This number is record amount for all the history of independent Azerbaijan (for comparison in 2011 in championship in Azerbaijan only 26 sportsmen were participating, in 2012 – 130).

The abovementioned Championship named after Heydar Aliyev caused a high attention of the International Orienteering Federation, as a result of which the member of the Council board of the IOF Tatyana Kalendaroglu visited Baku as a special representative of the IOF’s President.

The main judge of the competitions was Nizami Mursakulov (Azerbaijan), the referee's board consisted also of the international judges – Russian Orienteering Federation’s representative Aleksander Trempoltsev and Ukraine’s – Myhailo Pugach.

On 10th of May the participants of the competitions headed by President of the Orienteering Federation of Azerbaijan M.Kazymov and the honorable guests of the Championship -  the member of the Council board of the IOF T.Kalendaroglu, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Azerbaijan O.Mishchenko, the President of the Orienteering Federation of Turkey T.Cholakoglu, the President of the Georgian Orienteering Federation A.Hvedelidze laid flowers on the monument to the national leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev in the city of Khachmaz.

The organizations of the Championship, in order to meet all the international terms, decided to held competitions in the following categories: Men/Women-21 (Elite) – the most complicated distance for experienced orienteering sportsmen; "Open” – for beginners and "Open Junior” – for children.   

On the first day of the International Championship the competitions were held on a long distance in a given direction (for men from M-21 (Elite) group length of distance - 10.5 km, for women - 7.1 km), where the participants of the competitions had have to be  marked on 18 and 14 control destinations (CD) respectively. As a result, the winner in the long distance among the men became the Master of Sports of the Russian Federation Slepov Ilya, silver medalist - Candidate Master of Sports of Russia Artem Suhov, the third place was taken by the representative of Ukraine, Candidate Master of Sports Dolgopol Rostislav.

The best time in the long distance among women in the category of W-21 (Elite) showed Candidate Master of Sports of Russia Trukhina Julia, the second place took the sportsman from Ukraine Pugach Maria, the bronze won the Master of Sports of Azerbaijan Aliyeva Natalia ("Neftchi" club).

In category OPEN on the long distance (4.4 km - 8 CD) among men distinguished themselves Zakobluk Alexei (Azerbaijan, the National Mountaineering Tourist Club) and Vadim Galkin, Jafarov Anar (Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan). Among women in the same category with a distance of 3.5 km - 8 CD distinguished Gadzhizade Aytadzh (the team of the Executive Power of Sheki), Myroslava Mishchenko (Ukraine) and Gahramanova Kemale (the team of the MES AR).

On the second day of the Championship it was competitions on a short distance in a given direction. As a result, the winner among the men in the category M-21 (Elite)  on a short distance (4.05 km - 13 CD) was the Master of Sports of the Russian Federation Slepov Ilya, silver medalist - Candidate Master of Sports of Russia Artem Suhov, the third place took the Candidate Master of Sports of Moldova Bezdiga Andrey.

Among women in the category W-21 (Elite) on a short distance (3.1 km - 10 CD) the first place won the Russian Master of Sports Trukhina Julia, the second place was taken by the representative of Ukraine Pugach Maria, the bronze medal won the Master of Sports of AR Alieva Natalia ("Neftchi" club).

In category OPEN among men (distance 3 km -11 CD) the best results were showed by Alesgerov Aziz (Azerbaijan, Republican Mountaineering Tourist Club), Mamedov Akshin (Academy of Public Administration under the President of Azerbaijan Republic) and Zakobluk Alexei (Azerbaijan, Republican Mountaineering Tourist Club).

In women's OPEN category on a short distance (2.3 km - 10 CD) distinguished Cherpakova Ellina (Baku Slavic University), Babaeva Rovsana (Association of Scouts of Azerbaijan) and the third place was taken by Hamdullaeva Ulker (Azerbaijan, personal).

In the team competition upon the results of two days of the Championship "Heydar Aliyev Cup” won the team of the Russian Federation, which is comprised of the professional orienteering sportsmen, the second place - the team of Ukraine, which included both orienteering athletes of Ukraine and members of the Embassy of Ukraine in Azerbaijan, including the Ambassador of Ukraine to Azerbaijan Oleksandr Mishchenko. The bronze medal of the Championship won the team of the club "Neftchi" (Azerbaijan), whose members began to engage in orienteering about 1 year ago, but now demonstrated results that indicate that they have significant potential to achieve high results in the nearest future.

Taking into account that the men's competition on the first day of the Championship were held at a distance of particular complexity that exceeds the parameters 10 km, the panel of judges decided to award the best men's teams in this category. Thus, the first place won the team of the Russian Federation, silver - team of Ukraine and bronze - a team of the State Special Security Service (XDMX).

Revealing was the fact that in the category OPEN Junior were participated 34 children, all of whom were awarded diplomas of the Orienteering Federation of Azerbaijan and prizes.

The winners and prize-winners in the individual set-off were awarded with medals and diplomas of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In addition, the winners of the competitions additionally awarded the valuable gifts by the Ministry of Taxes of Azerbaijan Republic, the State Special Security Service and the Orienteering Federation of Azerbaijan.

During the Championship it was special positive spirit when the fact that orienteering had nowadays its rebirth in Azerbaijan made the "veterans’ of this kind of sport happy. Young people have opened an opportunity to meet new and to communicated with old friends, also from other countries, and to become a part of the sport of high achievements.

The Orienteering Federation of the Republic of Azerbaijan would like to note that thank to the attention of the President of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev which he paid to the development of sport in the country, our republic becomes a venue of the prestigious international events. The Federation also would like to express its gratitude to all co-organizers and sponsors of the competitions, especially for sustainable support from the Ministry of Taxes, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the State Frontier Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

A great appreciation the Federation would like to express to the Head of the State Special Security Service, colonel general Mr. Vagif Akhundov who allowed to use "Ulduz” recreation center in Nabran as a center of international competitions, except this for all the participants of Championship it was provided hot meals and tea by the solders of field kitchen.

The Orienteering Federation of the Republic of Azerbaijan would continue to take efforts in order to further development of the orienteering in Azerbaijan. In this regard we invite all who wish to start doing orienteering both for health or for professional reasons in order to represent Azerbaijan at international level.
